Very close encounters of the 'super moon' kind: Amazing pictures of our lunar neighbour... the nearest it's been in 20 years

It looks like an intergalactic
pilot is trying to cut the moon in half. In fact, this memorable image
was created by a very Earthly vapour trail from a plane.

The shot is one of many
extraordinary pictures of our nearest neighbour taken across the world
this weekend, including a magical one below at Glastonbury Tor,
Somerset.

As well as being full, the moon is currently relatively close to the Earth.

On Saturday it was 220,625 miles away, making it seem brighter and yellower and creating the eye-catching 'super moon' effect.

It was the first time since January
19, 1992, that the moon has been so close to the Earth. At its
furthest, it can be 250,000 miles away.

Sania Mirza weds Shoaib Malik

Clad in red traditional bridal wear, Indian tennis star Sania Mirza married Pakistani cricketer Shoaib Malik Monday afternoon after they got a no-objection certificate from the city police.

Accompanied by her father Imran Mirza, mother Naseema, younger sister Anam and a few close relatives, Sania reached a five-star hotel, Taj Deccan, where according to Qazi Mohammed Najeebuddin, the ‘nikah’took place at 1.15 p.m.

The 23-year-old, who was wearing a red saree, which her mother wore on her wedding 25 years ago, left her residence in Jubliee Hills amid drum beats.

Shoaib, 28, who divorced his first Ayesha Siddiqui last week, wore a black ’sherwani’ which was made by Shantanu and Nikhil.

Since the Qazi had refused to perform the ‘nikah’ Friday in the absence of Shoaib’s passport, sources said Sania’s family got a no-objection certificate from the Hyderabad police.

Shoaib’s passport, seized last week in connection with the case filed by his first wife Ayesha Siddiqui, is still with the police.

Security has been tightened at the hotel and the media was not allowed inside.

Earlier, Sania’s spokesperson confirmed that the wedding would be held Monday.

“This is to confirm that Sania and Shoaib’s wedding will take place shortly. The timing and venue can’t be disclosed for security reasons,” Rucha Naik told reporters outside Sania’s residence.

Naik said there would be a ‘mehendi’ ceremony Tuesday. The ’sangeet’ would be held the next day while Sania’s family would hold the wedding reception April 15.

The ‘nikah’ put an end to a series of controversies surrounding the high-profile marriage ever since it was announced March 29.

It is learnt that the two families decided to solemnise the marriage Monday to avoid further controversies, especially in the light of Sunday’s ‘fatwa’ issued by Islamic religious scholars against Sania and Shoaib living together before their marriage.

Sania’s media manager Sunday night clarified that Shoaib moved out of Sania’s house a few days ago.

The Sunni Ulema Board, a group of religious scholars, had declared that the act of Sania and Shoaib living together was against Islamic Shariat. It asked Muslims not to attend such marriages where men and women come together in close proximity in violation of Islamic rules.

Additional Commissioner of Police N. Narasimha Reddy said it may take a week for Shoaib to get back his passport from a court as some formalities with regard to closure of the case would have to be completed.

Ayesha withdrew the case Wednesday after Shoaib divorced her.

2 Mobile Companies Want an End to SMS Packages

Two leading Mobile operators are favoring to impose 10 paisa charges on all text messages sent to other networks, while another two operators opposed the idea – fifth operator remained somewhat neutral, in a high level industry meeting held at PTA headquarters yesterday, told us sources at PTA.

These other-network charges (interconnection charges) can be the death of SMS packages, as currently mobile operators are allowing as many as 500 text messages a day for Rs. 4 to 5, which will become impossible with 10 paisa per SMS charge.

Telenor and Mobilink were of the view that due to their larger customer base, they receive highest number of text messages from other networks.

However, industry sources revealed that actual hindrance is network capacity of these two operators. A good explanation of this fact is that Ufone is opposing the charges, which has somewhat same size of subscriber base as of Telenor.

SMS facility is widely used and liked by mobile phone subscribers in Pakistan. Some researches consider the low priced SMS as key factor behind the fast growing communication trends in the country. Due to its low price and nature of channel, SMS can’t be replaced by any other mode of communication.

SMS lovers were first threatened by Government taxes, which were later on withdrawn by Prime Minister, but now the current regime by cellular operators may put all SMS packages on halt.

It merits mentioning here that Telenor has already slashed their SMS packages by limiting the off-net and on-net quota. For instance, if a SMS package allows 1000 SMS in one week, customer can’t send more than 500 off-net or otherwise on-net messages.

As per anticipations, if regulated, other network SMS charges will be widely opposed.

"That's not fair. Do you honestly think those feet are going to get out of bed early in the morning when the baby cries, or walk through a birthday party without crushing one or two of the guests?"

LAHORE: After imposition of 20-paisa tax per SMS, the cellular companies are likely to withdraw their discount packages from July 1.

‘It will not be possible for us to continue with the bundle package offers in the wake of fresh tax,’ a representative of a cellular company told Dawn on Wednesday.

He said though the government in the federal budget 2009-10 had reduced the general sales tax and SIM activation charges from 21 per cent to 19 per cent and Rs500 to Rs250, respectively, 20-paisa increase on per SMS would not only burden subscribers but also affect the business of such companies that had introduced packages at cheaper rates.’

He said a consumer used to send an average five to seven SMS daily and youth, dumb and deaf were its major `beneficiaries.’ Some companies had started SMS service even in Urdu.

‘At the end of the day it will be clear that the government has not provided us with any relief,’ an official of another company said.

It is learnt that the cellular companies are joining hands against tax on SMS and will register their protest with the government shortly.

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority has welcomed the concessions given to the telecom industry.

‘We do not see any major impact of SMS tax on the industry. However, we will conduct a study in this regard after a certain period,’ PTA chairman Dr Muhammad Yasin told this reporter.

‘It will be premature to say that 20-paisa per SMS tax has negative impact on the industry,’ he said.

Though the cellular companies are perturbed over the new tax but they can only register their concern with the respective quarters through PTA.

‘Unless PTA is convinced that 20-paisa per SMS tax should be reduced the companies are left with only one option – to raise the SMS rates,’ said another representative of an operator.

He said the operators would also have to suspend their ongoing ad campaigns in the wake of the new development.

‘We are now working out new packages and rates,’ he said. The cellular industry had generated a revenue of Rs278 billion in 2007-08.

The previous taxation rate on the cellular services (15 per cent) was already one of the highest in the region.

Owing to stiff competition among the cellular operators in the country, lower tariff had been introduced to attract maximum number of subscribers. Telecom sector, according to PTA, has attracted more than US$5.6 billion foreign direct investment during the last four years.

During 2007-08, the telecom sector attracted a sum of US$1.4 billion foreign direct investment which is about 30 per cent of the total FDI in the country. During 2007-08, the telecom industry ranked second after financial sector as major FDI recipient in Pakistan.

Pakistan starts Daylight Saving Time April 15, 2009

Pakistan starts daylight saving time (DST) on Wednesday, April 15, 2009,
to alleviate the nation’s power shortages. The proposed daylight saving date
already changed twice before the final decision on the date was made. The
daylight saving arrangement has already met criticism from locals and
businesses, and many anticipate that it will disrupt their daily lives.

The cabinet finally approved for Pakistan’s clocks to move one hour
forward at midnight (00:00) between April 14 and April 15 when the nation
will be six hours ahead of Coordinated Universal Time (UTC +6 hours).
Pakistan’s Ministry of Water and Power anticipates that daylight saving time
would help the country save electricity and reduce load shedding.

Citizens Dreading DST

The Ministry of Water and Power originally proposed for the country’s
2009 daylight saving schedule to start on April 1. The daylight saving
schedule was then delayed due to weather conditions. Early in April, May 1
was proposed as another date to start DST. But when the final decision was
made to push the daylight saving date forward to April 15, the proposal met
resistance in the public.

Many people are against the government’s daylight saving schedule for
2009. There are calls for the government to ensure that confusion is
minimized on the time changes and for the government to push for transport
providers to have accurate time schedules. Many also believed, from
previous experience of DST, that many transport providers, including
railways and airlines, were apathetic to the changes and often forgot to
inform passengers about the new time schedules.

Moreover, many people claim that they will need to change their sleeping
habits and lifestyle. They also believe that there is no certainty that
household electricity usage would reduce during the daylight saving period.
Another point that was brought up was that the literacy rate was low in
rural areas and more than half of the nation’s population still resided in
villages. Traders in Pakistan expressed that they were not ready to close
their shops at sunset.

Pakistan’s Power Deficit

Pakistan Electric Power Company (PEPCO) (cited in Sify News, March 21,
2009), suggested that the federal government advance the clocks on April 1,
2009, to cope with the country’s power deficit. Later, the Ministry of Water
and Power planned for the daylight saving schedule to start on May 1. The
cabinet accepted April 15 as the date to change the clocks. It is
anticipated that a government awareness campaign on daylight energy
conservation would be launched as well.

Power is being suspended for up to eight hours during the day, adding to
businesses’ and communities’ frustration. Moreover, Pakistan’s power demand
is set to increase over the next few years, particularly during the nation’s
summer peak period.

Businesses and community groups who are pushing for daylight saving time
hope that the extra hour of sunlight in the afternoon, through daylight
saving time, could help save energy across the nation. People can then rely
on natural sunlight instead of depending on artificial lighting during the
later part of the day.

However, not everyone agreed that daylight saving time was the solution
to Pakistan’s energy crisis. Some people have expressed in the recent past
that daylight saving time was problematic to daily life. For example, some
workers complained about preparing their work in the dark, while parents
complained that electricity was shut down during the early morning hours,
which was when they prepared for their children to go to school during the
daylight saving schedule.

Results from Daylight Saving Time 2008

In 2008 Pakistan’s Federal Cabinet approved for daylight saving time to
occur from June 1 to October 31 to alleviate power shortages and reduce the
amount of forced load shedding. Load shedding refers to the process by which
an electric utility cuts power to some customers in response to a shortage
of available electricity.

According to a government source from the Ministry of Water and Power,
the 2008 daylight saving measure saw an energy saving that lasted for five
months. The amount of energy that was saved enabled PEPCO to reduce the load
shedding in certain areas by one to two hours on a daily basis (on the
average). However, a local newspaper recently claimed that the company did
not save much electricity during that period.

Pakistan’s Time Zone

Pakistan is on UTC +5 hours during the non-daylight saving period and
moves the clocks one hour forward to UTC +6 hours during the daylight saving
period. These are the hours that have been set for Pakistan’s daylight
saving arrangement in previous years.

Pakistan’s clocks will move one hour forward at midnight (00:00) between
April 14 and April 15, then probably shift one hour back at midnight (00:00)
between October 31 and November 1 in 2009.

Following the practice of the Holy Prophet Muhammad, peace and blesssings be upon him and his Household (Ahlul Bayt), Muslims begin with the name of Allah before doing anything. Bismillahir-Rahmanir-Rahim is translated as "In the name of God, the Compassionate, the Merciful". Bismillah occurs at the head of every chapter (surah) in the Holy Qur'an, with the exception of the 9th chapter, Surah al-Baraa'at (also called Surah al-Tawbah). Calligraphers have written bismillah in many ways. This pictorial gives us a unique opportunity to look at some of the ways bismillah can be written.

In a letter on behalf of Prophet Muhammad,
peace be upon him and his Household

This bismillah is taken from a letter written on behalf of Prophet Muhammad [s] to the Ruling Archbishop of Egypt. The letter was written in the fifth year after Hijrah (627 CE). This letter is preserved in the Topkapi Museum, in Istanbul, Turkey. The actual inscriber is not known. The Holy Prophet [s] used to ask several different companions to write on his behalf. Among them was a young companion named Zaid bin Thabit.

A friend who is a computer expert received the following directly from a system administrator for a corporate system. It is an excellent message that ABSOLUTELY applies to ALL of us who send e-mails. Please read the short letter below, even if you're sure you already follow proper procedures.
Do you really know how to forward e-mails? 50% of us do; 50% DO NOT.
Do you wonder why you get viruses or junk mail?
Do you hate it?

Every time you forward an e-mail there is information left over from the people who got the message before you, namely their e-mail addresses and names. As the messages get forwarded along, the list of addresses builds, and builds, and builds, and all it takes is for some poor sap to get a virus, and his or her computer can send that virus to every E-mail address that has come across his computer. Or, someone can take all of those addresses and sell them or send junk mail to them in the hopes that you will go to the site and he will make five cents for each hit. That's right, all of that inconvenience over a nickel. How do you stop it? Well, there are several easy steps. Try the following if you haven't done it before:

(1) When you forward an e-mail, DELETE all of the other addresses that appear in the body of the message (at the top). That's right, DELETE them. Highlight them and delete them, backspace them, cut them, whatever it is you know how to do. It only takes a second. You MUST click the "Forward" button first and then you will have full editing capabilities against the body and headers of the message. If you don't click on "Forward" first, you won't be able to edit the message at all.

(2) Whenever you send an e-mail to more than one person, do NOT use the To: or Cc: fields for adding e-mail addresses. Always use the BCC :( blind carbon copy) field for listing the e-mail addresses. This is the way the people you send to will only see their own e-mail address. If you don't see your BCC option, click on where it says To: and your address list will appear. Highlight the address and choose BCC: and that's it, it's that easy. When you send to BCC: your message will automatically say "Undisclosed Recipients in the "TO:" field of the people who receive it.

Note: (AOL users have to put each email address in the To: or Cc: lines in parentheses and when the mail is delivered it says undisclosed recipients..)

(3) Remove any "FW:" in the subject line. You can re-name the subject if you wish or even fix spelling.

(4) ALWAYS hit your Forward button from the actual e-mail you are reading. Ever get those e-mails that you have to open 10 pages to read the one page with the information on it? By Forwarding from the actual page you wish someone to view; you stop them from having to open many e-mails just to see what you sent.

(5) Have you ever gotten an email that is a petition? It states a position and asks you to add your name and address and to forward it to 10 or 15 people or your entire address book. The email can be forwarded on and on and can collect thousands of names and email addresses.
A FACT: The completed petition is actually worth a couple of bucks to a professional spammer because of the wealth of valid names and email addresses contained therein.
DO NOT put your email address of any petition.
If you want to support the petition, send it as your own personal letter to the intended recipient. Your position may carry more weight as a personal letter than a laundry list of names and email address on a petition.
(And don't believe the ones that say that the email is being traced, it just ain't so!)

Some of the other emails to delete and not forward are:

1. The one that says something like, "Send this email to 10 people and you all see something great run across your screen." Or sometimes they'll just tease you by saying 'something really cute will happen.' IT AIN'T GONNA HAPPEN!!!!! (We are still seeing some of the same emails that we waited on 10 years ago!)

2. Don't let the bad luck ones scare you either, delete them, they are trash.

3. Before you forward an 'Amber Alert', or a 'Virus Alert', or some of the other emails floating around nowadays, check them out before you forward them. Most of them are junk mail that's been circling the net for YEARS! Just about everything you receive in an email that is in question can be checked out at Snopes.
Just go to www.snopes.com . It's really easy to find out if it's real or not.
If it's not, please don't pass it on.
4. Before sending the email skip down to the bottom and remove ALL the build up of "Virus Protection Messages" that get tacked on each time an email gets forwarded.

So please, in the future, let's stop the junk mail and the viruses.

Finally, here's an idea!!! Let's send this to everyone we know ...But strip my email address off first, please).

This is something that SHOULD be forwarded, so do it.

Namira Salim is poised to become the first Pakistani woman astronaut, having successfully completed her space flight training at a facility in the US ahead of blasting off into space in the world's first commercial space liner in 2009.

Salim, 35, made her name as a sculptor, musician, designer and poet before she was chosen in March 2006 by entrepreneur Richard Branson from among 44,000 candidates to be one of the first 100 space tourists for flights to be offered by his firm Virgin Galactic .

She was trained in the STS-400 simulator, the world's most advanced high performance centrifuge, under the supervision of Virgin Galactic after clearing medical tests. The training assessed Salim's ability to tolerate and adapt to gravitational forces and motion sickness during a sub-orbital spaceflight .

"I am very happy. These are unforgettable moments," Namira said from the US on completing her training.

"I am not only proud to be the first Pakistani, but particularly proud to be the first female from Pakistan to have had such a phenomenal experience."

Salim has said that she hoped her achievement would break "new ground for Muslim and Pakistani women" to enter fields that were hitherto closed to them.

She has encouraged others, particularly women, to open their minds to the vast potential and opportunities the world offers and excel in all spheres of lives.

"It was an unforgettable experience and makes one very excited for the actual space flight now that I know that I am qualified to fly to sub-orbital space," she said.

Women in Pakistan, especially in rural and tribal areas, are victims of discrimination and violence. Pakistan's former tourism minister Nilofar Bakhtiar had to resign in May after hardline clerics accused her of obscenity for hugging an instructor after making a charity parachute jump in France. She was also sacked as head of the women's wing of the ruling PML-Q party .

"There is no limit to positive accomplishment and if one heads in that direction, one would only conquer the stars," Salim said.

Salim was born in the port city of Karachi but now lives in Dubai and France. Her father hails from Pakistan's Punjab province while her mother was born in Allahabad and brought up in Delhi .

Her fascination with space began at the age of 14 when she got her first telescope. Two years later, she became the first female member of Amastro Pak "Pakistan's first astronomy society" and maintained an interest in space through her university years .

She moved to the US, initially to study international business at Hofstra University in New York and then international relations at Columbia University. While in the US, she also learnt to fly .

Salim's multi-dimensional mixed media art has been exhibited at summits of the UN, UNESCO and SAARC and she will publish her first book of English poetry this year .

During her recent training in the US, Salim was exposed to the gravitational forces and weightlessness she will experience during the launch and re-entry of the Virgin Galactic space liner designed by legendary aviator Burt Rutan .

She was exposed to the same gravitational forces that are experienced by astronauts who have been launched into space.

"The complete spaceflight experience, along with the full visual simulation of the space environment, was a taste of what it's like to launch into space, be weightless in zero gravity and re-enter into the earth's atmosphere safely," she said

Because of that, Allah forgave all the sins of the people of your household. I was afraid if I made you fall one more time, then Allah will forgive the sins of the people of your village, so I made sure that you reached the MASJID safely." So do not let Shaitan benefit from his actions. Do not put off a good that you intended to do as you never know how much reward you might receive from the hardships you encounter while trying to achieve that good.

MUSHARRAF SHUTS DOWN GEO TV (Updated 0610)

ISLAMABAD: GEO TV, Pakistan's premier Urdu news channel, also seen round the world as the main source of news and current affairs, was shut down at 1 a.m. Pakistan time (12 midnight Dubai time) after President Pervez Musharraf put tremendous pressure to silence a media outlet which had refused to bow down to his dictates.

Informed sources said President Pervez Musharraf himself intervened to stop all GEO news transmissions from Dubai, after a two-week standoff in Pakistan during which all major news channels were shut down by cable operators, who are directly controlled by the Pakistani authorities.

The shutting down of the Geo News was universally condemned by almost every political party and member of the civil society minutes before the anchors, almost in tears, signed off.

PML-N leader Mian Nawaz Sharif told Dr. Shahid Masood on telephone from London it was a tragic moment in Pakistan's history as the Musharraf regime was bent upon destroying every symbol of free speech and democracy in the country.

Makhdoon Amin Faheem, the PPP Vice Chairman told Geo News, in its dying moments, that it would be a tragedy for the country and democracy if Geo went off the air, which it did minutes later.

Lt. General Talat Masood, Retired Chief Justice Saeeduzzaman Siddiqi and many others representing the civil society, who used to appear regular in Geo talk shows, expressed shock and disgust at the decision to shut of Geo TV.

Popular news anchors came on Geo News around midnight Pakistan time to announce that their channel had been ordered to go off the air as result of the continued deadlock between the Pakistani authorities and the media channels, following the imposition of the emergency in the country.

In Pakistan all GEO channels were blocked by the military regime after the imposition of the emergency but on Friday two main channels, DAWN News and AAJ were back on air, with AAJ announcing that two its most popular talks shows, hosted by Talat Hussain, Nusrat Javeed and Mushtaq Mihas, were suspended temporarily.

Geo News was shut down because it had refused to budge. After six years of objective and highly professional telecasts, which earned the channel the honour of being the most popular TV channel, the Government of Pakistan put it off the air on Nov 4 after emergency was imposed.

Geo News was under pressure from day one. The government tried to bring it down but the channel became a household name in Pakistan and abroad and was declared by the international observers as the most watched and popular TV channel.

Its role in the judicial crisis, which started on March 9, when the President filed a reference against the Chief Justice, was highly applauded, domestically and internationally.

Geo kept the whole world informed about the developments regarding the events unfolding during the struggle of people of Pakistan for restoration of dignity of the judiciary through its objective reporting by giving all points of view. The programmes, talks shows and commentaries produced by Geo created an impact and awareness among the people.

Sources said the government first asked the Geo administration to stop the most popular programmes of popular TV hosts Dr. Shahid Masood, Hamid Mir and Kamran Khan without offering any tangible reason why they should be stopped.

After the success of the Chief Justice campaign all private news channels were banned from telecasting live programmes and filming outside the studios.

The media workers protested against the move and the government had to accept the demands of the media workers. The shows were allowed to continue but live coverage was banned.

In the meanwhile General Pervez Musharraf kept on resorting to pressure tactics and the Geo channels revenue sources were targeted.

Under his orders all government advertisements were not only stopped but other commercial advertisers were also pressurized not to give business to Geo. The channel withstood all the pressures and suffered huge losses. A statement submitted in the Sindh High Court on Friday said almost Rs1 billion was lost by the channel.

After the emergency General Musharraf banned Geo and other channels inside Pakistan. Geo stood the pressure and refused to sign on the dotted line.

The sources pointed out that the government under General Pervez Musharraf enhanced its pressure on the media to regulate itself under the command of the administration after the clamping of emergency.

The media was strangulated through an ordinance that placed restrictions on its freedom that had no precedent. It was virtually made impossible to carry on free journalism in the country in the presence of the said ordinance.

A so-called code of conduct was thrust upon the media to follow without any consultations with the journalist community. Private channels were asked to sign an undertaking that would have made the channels subservient to the authorities.

This was done after suspending all private channels of the country and the channel administrations were asked to accept the conditions and sign the document of undertaking.

They were told to accept provisional licences instead of the permanent ones they had. The earlier licences were cancelled through the same order.

The sources said that General Pervez Musharraf asked the channels to stop their current affairs programmes, which were not acceptable to him and demanded that anchorpersons should be fired.

The channels who signed the document were restored on the cable. Some channels accepted the official advice while others refused to follow.

Geo declined to oblige General Pervez Musharraf as the demands included cooperation on all points which the new caretaker government would bring up.

It was demanded that Geo should stop the objectionable current affairs programmes and toe the official line.

The authorities wanted that the channel should cooperate with President General Pervez Musharraf.

The channel was further asked to submit all its programmes for monitoring by government officials, as no programme without clearance would be aired.

The sources said that Geo was first forbidden in Pakistan through cable not brought under pressure through the authorities concerned of the country from where it was being aired.

The channel was being seen at some places in the country through dish antennas and Internet but the government's technical experts first tried to stop it on the Internet and then a ban was placed on the import of dish antenna and relevant equipment used for receiving direct satellite signals.

The authorities in the host country had to ask the Geo News to stop its telecast from their up-linking station under excruciating pressure coming from the Government of Pakistan without considering its long-term adverse impact on the image of the host country.

The authorities concerned while conveying the message of the Pakistan Government to close down the channel, ridiculed the decision as they had no experience of facing such a demand which was contrary to all norms of decency and business in the modern time business culture, the sources revealed.

Geo's voice was silenced by General Pervez Musharraf as its anchors, almost in tears, bid farewell to its viewers and listeners.
